A little piece of Rostislav Loukine’s (1904-1988) Russian soul still lives on in Arsonval which has devoted a museum to the painter who was Russian by birth, Belgian by nationality but French at heart, as he loved to say. Loukine’s work is populated with large sacred figures and icons, scenes from traditional Russian tales and legends, portraits like that of Bachelard, still life and landscapes as well. Oils on canvas, gouaches and water colours in small or monumental format – fifty in all – decorate the museum’s three rooms dedicated to him by the small commune of Arsonval.
