The Société Académique de l'Aube founded the Troyes museum in 1831, on the premises of the former Saint-Loup abbey. It began by bringing together works of art seized during the revolution, followed by a large number donated or bequeathed to the museum, and finally by new acquisitions. These collections were transferred to the town in 1945, when the museum became a municipal museum.

The size of the collections meant that they had to be housed in two buildings. In 1949, the Hôtel de Vauluisant housed the collections devoted to 16th-century art, with remarkable paintings and sculptures that provide an insight into the extraordinary flowering of religious art in Troyes and the Champagne region at that time.
