This tour invites you to discover a selection of magnificent stained glass windows of the Pays d'Othe and Armance churches. Dating from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century, each of these stained glass windows is unique and differs in style, technique and theme, from the most common to the rarest. Why a stained glass circuit? Stained glass plays an important role in the Aube; the department has a unique set in Europe with more than 1100 old glass windows and 2085 modern and contemporary stained glass windows. But why such abundance? Money circulated heavily in the region thanks to the Champagne Fairs. The clergy and the nobility built stained glass buildings, a symbol of their respective power. Thanks to conservation and protection efforts, the Aube is the department that has preserved the most stained glass windows of the 16th century. During the Second World War, some of them were stored in a safe place and others were sent to the free zone. The restoration and creation know-how continues in the region; these practices are practiced on a daily basis in different Aubois workshops such as for example that of Cécile Boël installed in the Pays d'Othe.
